In 2005, Sierra Nevada brewing company was given the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award for Sustainable Practices by the Environmental Protection Agency of the State of California.

The Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) is California’s highest environmental honor. The award honors individuals, organizations, and businesses that have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made notable, voluntary contributions in conserving California’s precious resources, protecting and enhancing its environment, building public-private partnerships and strengthening the state’s economy.

Sierra Nevada designed its Mills River, California facility to achieve LEED Platinum certification by innovating in a number of ways in its design.

Its Mills River brewery includes nearly 2,200 photovoltaic solar panels and uses microturbine technology to convert methane biogas captured from an onsite wastewater treatment plant into electricity.

The facility captures rainwater runoff and uses it for irrigation and parking areas at are made with permeable surfaces so that rainwater can be absorbed by the ground and replenish underground water reserves.  Like other highly thoughtful green buildings, the facility uses extensive wall and ceiling insulation and large insulated windows to bring in natural light.  All this makes fora a facility that is not only energy efficient, but beautiful and comfortable to inhabit.
